Surgery For Fibroids & Cysts

If you’re considering surgery to remove ovarian cysts or fibroids in the uterus, consider keyhole surgery or laparoscopy. Keyhole surgery, which is relatively new, offers you a much faster recovery rate, is much safer and less expensive than other surgery methods.

Today, laparoscopy or keyhole surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures performed by gynaecologists to remove an ectopic pregnancy, to treat endometriosis, or ovarian cystectomy, adhesiolysis, laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy, and for radical hysterectomy.

It’s also known as minimally invasive endoscopic surgery because it is a surgical procedure that is done through small incisions.

Keyhole surgery allows a surgeon to carry out an operation without having to make a large incision (which normally happens in conventional or ‘open’ surgery). When done using keyhole surgery, surgery scars are small, between 3mm and 15 mm in length.

Laparoscopy or keyhole surgery is much safer, less expensive, convenient with faster recovery (you don’t have to stay long in the hospital).

How keyhole surgery works

This video below, filmed during one of Dr Somas’ keyhole surgery procedures for one of his female patients, shows what happens during a laparascopic surgery.

Gynaecological laparoscopy is used to visualise inside the abdomen, through a small incision, to examine the fallopian tubes, ovaries and the uterus.

Using specialized techniques, miniature cameras with microscopes, tiny fiber-optic flashlights and high definition monitors, surgeons in many specialties can perform surgery through an incision that requires only a stitch or two to close.

A medical telescope is attached to a camera, known as a laparoscope, is inserted into the abdomen through a small incision slightly above the umbilicus. The pictures taken from the camera are sent through high definition cables to a television screen and magnified, letting the surgeon see the intra-abdominal organs.

What keyhole surgery treats

Keyhole surgery is used to diagnose and treat gynaecological disorders such as:

  • diagnosing and treating endometriosis
  • investigating and treating female infertility
  • diagnosing and treating pelvic inflammatory disease
  • diagnosing and treating chronic pelvic pain
  • for ovarian and lymph node biopsy
  • diagnosing and removing an ectopic pregnancy
  • for female sterilization
  • removing ovarian cyst and tumours
  • removing uterus (hysterectomy)
  • removing fibroids (myomectomy)
  • repairing pelvic organ prolapse
  • repairing blocked Fallopian tubes in female subfertility

For women, laparoscopic procedure or keyhole surgery is advantageous because of the lesser post-surgery pain and best of all, a shorter hospital stay. You save money and time and bounce back into your day-to-day activities quickly.

Keyhole surgery or laparoscopy helps you recover faster with minimal scarring and less pain. If you’re considering gynaecological surgery, have a chat with Dr Somas to explore this surgical approach.
